Description Nicknamed the "City of the Doges" or the "Serenissima", is a town on the Po plain in the north-east of Italy and the capital of the Veneto. Located on the lagoon of the same name, Venice is the main city of Veneto and north-eastern Italy.
It is the most visited city in Italy, ahead of Rome (18 million) and Florence (13 million). The affluence is fairly constant, with spikes during the Carnival, and between May and October.
Venice was the gateway to the east, founded by refugees fleeing the barbarians, it became a Byzantine province which gained its independence in the 10th century. In the Middle Ages, it conquered a vast empire in the Mediterranean which assured for centuries wealth and power.
The whole city and the Lagoon were declared in 1979 to the patrimony of the humanity of Unesco.
